What To Wear?!

I am asked before almost every single engagement, family, graduation, and just about any other type of session, "What should we/I wear?"

I think it's best if you try to coordinate without being "matchy." Being matchy is everyone wearing khakis and a polo. While this is a clean look for photos there is not much for style or personality to everyone having solid color polos. To coordinate, choose a theme, style, or color and use small elements in each outfit to have them be cohesive. Such as, if you like the color red coordinate mom's scarf, dad's shirt, son's hat, and daughter's hair bow or tights in red. Layers and textures will also photograph well and add dynamics to the image. And most of all make sure you are comfortable in what you wear. It still needs to represent "You."

Here are some fantastic examples:

This is an ultimate example of a coordinated family session! Instead of choosing a color they decided on complimentary tones of oranges, tans, and blues. Everyone has layers to show multiple colors as well as textures in every outfit. They each have some form of denim as well. And all are clearly comfortable in what they are wearing.

This couple's wedding colors are coral and teal so they decided to incorporate that into their engagement photos. Her jewelry and accessories are also teal.

I adore this family and they always have fantastic outfits for their sessions. Elements of red and white were used throughout as well as great layers with their jackets.

This is simplistic yet great coordination. Little mans striped polo has both navy and black stripes which Mom & Dad mimicked with their solid color tees.

All the color does not necessarily have to be on your top. This is a great example of colored denim working well to compliment the red in each outfit.

These outfits not only match with shades of blue but also using bits of denim throughout, included the girls dress.

Coordinating larger families can be tough but this family did it quite nicely. Working with shades of blue and orange, mixing patterns and solids both. They even have great layers with the vests and texture with the sweater. All outfits were complete with casual denim.
